Some things in the eye fluoresce naturally. The
most obvious is the crystalline lens.
As a person ages, glucose sugar reacts with the proteins in the lens to produce new
compounds that fluoresce. The Fluorotron can easily measure this fluorescence.
Since diabetic patients generally have much higher glucose in circulation, these
fluorescent compounds accumulate much more quickly. Studies have indicated that this
method may be used to screen for people who have diabetes. |
